Two paths to the same active ingredient
When you compare GLP-1 programs, you'll see two broad options: brand-name medications like Wegovy® and Zepbound®, and "compounded" semaglutide or tirzepatide. Both deliver the same class of active ingredient, but they differ in how they're made, priced, and regulated.
Brand-name GLP-1s
Brand-name products (Ozempic®, Wegovy®, Mounjaro®, Zepbound®) are FDA-approved, manufactured by the original drug makers, and come in standardized pens. The trade-offs are cost and supply: they can be expensive without insurance and have faced periodic shortages.
Compounded GLP-1s
Compounded versions are prepared by licensed compounding pharmacies and are often more affordable and more readily available. They can be a practical option for cash-pay patients, but quality depends entirely on the pharmacy. Only use a program that works with reputable, licensed compounding pharmacies and keeps a licensed provider involved in your care.
How to choose
If you have insurance that covers brand-name GLP-1s, a program with an insurance team can make that route affordable. If you're paying cash, a transparent compounded plan may cost far less per month. Either way, confirm the all-in monthly price and make sure a licensed clinician is overseeing your treatment before you commit.
